Algonquin

 

Area Information

Algonquin’s natural resourses along the Fox River once drew the  Patawatomi Native Americans to the territory. Algonquin was then settled by the Gilligan family from western Virginia in 1836. The site he and his family settled was known as Corhhish’s Ferry. Later, Samual Edwards a settler from Philadelphia who owned much of the land in the area renamed the settlement Algonquin, which was the name of native Americans from the east. The name means “across the water.” A name fitting for a river town. The name Algonquin became official on December 23, 1847.

Algonquin was a summer vacation destination for Chicago area residents. In fact, the turning of the Pingry Hotel into a vacation resort by the Morton family in 1889 foreshadowed the future direction of the community that incorporated in 1890. Algonquin is located in McHenry County 39 miles NW of the Chicago Loop, Algonqiun lies in a glacial valley where the fox river runs. Today, Algonquin has a small town feel with a downtown offering shopping and riverside dining options.
