Crystal Lake is located in McHenry county about 49 miles from the downtown Chicago Loop. It is also located about 35 miles west of O’Hare International Aiport. The village of Crystal Lake has a combined 18 square miles and is one of the faster growing communities in the northwest Chicago Suburbs.
Crystal Lake History
The City of Crystal Lake can be traced to its founders back to two separate communities. In particular, these communites established in the 1800’s, called “Nunda” and “Crystal Lake”. Eventually, The villages of Crystal Lake and Nunda were incorporated in 1874. Furthermore, in 1908 the village of Nunda was changed to North Crystal Lake. Finally, the Village of North Crystal Lake was annexed into the Village of Crystal Lake in 1914 as it remains today.
Downtown Crystal Lake is the historic and cultural center of the community. Therefore, It is the place where local businesses still thrive. Today the village of Crystal Lake main economic activities in the city are retail, dining, and light industry. This includes, specialized, local-owned shops and restaurants as well as some larger national chains. Furthermore, the city of Crystal Lake was voted in the US top 100 small cities to live back in 2016′.
