Area Information
Originally an unincorporated part of Schaumburg Township in Cook County, Hoffman Estates is situated 29 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop. The community, initially known as Wildcat Grove, was positioned to the west of Roselle Road and north of Golf Road. Settled by German farmers, this area of Schaumburg Township remained sparsely populated well into the twentieth century.
In 1959, with a population of approximately 8,000 residents, Hoffman Estates achieved incorporation. The growth of Hoffman Estates gained momentum with the construction of large subdivisions by the Hoffman father and son builders, leading to a rapid expansion and the adoption of its current name.
In 1992, Hoffman Estates became the new home for the relocated Sears Holdings company. The town has devoted 4,080 acres to forest preserves, constituting one-third of its total area and supporting conservation efforts. The population surged from 22,238 in 1970 to 46,363 in 1990. As of 2023, the welcome sign indicates a current population of 52,530.
