Incorporated in 1887, West Dundee is a town with a population of 7,914 residents as per the 2022 census. Despite several attempts to merge with East Dundee, located just across the Fox River (pictured above), the 1956 referendum for consolidation was approved by East Dundee but rejected by West Dundee. In 1962, the roles were reversed in a subsequent referendum.
The towns’ distinct identities trace back to their early founders, with West Dundee’s Scottish and English heritage setting it apart from its German neighbors. Positioned as a far northwest Chicago suburb, West Dundee has successfully retained its quaintness and small-town atmosphere.
